Could it be
That ‘rights’ are like money?
Some people are born into a place
With a broad understanding
Of their own rights
And in fact have more
Than many others
Something curious happens
When a person becomes aware of their ‘rights’
(Read: privilege)
And of their ability to hand them over
On occasion
Spending them, so to speak,
When the return
is of great enough value.
What happens when enough
Are willing to spend their rights
In order to bridge the gap with those who have few
Or none?
Is human connection
A larger view of humanity
Of great enough value
To inspire me to spend
Some of my own rights?
