One of many things
I struggle to understand
About the culture of
Middle and upper class
Predominantly white
Americans
Is the use of the home.
It seems to be
Above all
A place of privacy
Intimacy
(Isolation)
Where a select few
Are welcomed.
I think of how
In Afghanistan and
When visiting immigrants in America
I was welcomed inside more homes
In a few days
Than in seven months
Of living in America
Among ‘my’ people
The inside of a home
Is mundane and sacred
At the same time.
To be welcomed into a home
In a way
Is to be welcomed into a life.
And for now
I consider whether
It is better to learn to function
In the segment of society that says
Privacy is paramount
Or to seek out those to whom
I am an outsider
But for whom a revolving door
Is a normal way of life
