On social mobility

A desire for upward mobility
Is assumed to be good
And necessary
By so many.
And no doubt, sometimes
It is.
But I increasingly observe
That there is some connection
Between this ambition
And a lack of enjoyment
Of life.

For myself
I am more interested
In an acceptance
Of downward mobility
And an awareness
Perhaps even an experience
Of covert
Rather than overt
Prestige.
And the appreciation
That often characterizes
A simpler life.

Anyway
If you are starting closer to
What is deemed
‘The top,’
There is more room to grow
If you head
‘Down.’

  1. I agree.

I once met a man who always bought a car older than the one he currently owned.

He also tried to give away most everything he owned. The trouble with that is people were moved by his generosity and just kept giving him things. He smiled and told me he had more things to give.

I think that the more people spend on their wedding, the shorter the marriage will last.

    Hmm
